Developmental Disabilities FAQ
What are Developmental Disabilities?
Developmental disabilities are disabilities that originate before an individual reaches the age of 18 and that continue or expect to be continued indefinitely. They are a substantial handicap for such individual. They can include mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, down syndrome and autism.
What skills are needed for daily living and functioning?
The skills needed to live, work, and function in the Noah Homes’ community include: communication, self-care, home living, social skills, leisure, health and safety, self-direction, community awareness, and work. These along with self-dignity, respect, and love are flagrant in each person’s environment and across all aspects of the individual’s life.
Can the people that live at Noah Homes have a normal home setting, work regular jobs and go to school?
Yes. Noah Homes prides itself on creating and maintaining a community of homes designed to provide a normal family-like living environment for everyone that lives there. The community encourages the residents (also known as the “folks”) to learn the many activities of daily living skills needed to maintain and live in a home. Almost all of the Noah Homes residents with developmental disabilities are capable of working part time or full time in regular jobs and/or participate in day programs or attend school.
